Ned Chambreau: Notes for General O.O. Howard

Compiled by Dennis Chambreau

The notebooks are leatherbound pocket notebooks that were carried on the trips. These trips were undertaken at the request of General O.O. Howard, Commanding Officer at Vancouver, Department of the Columbia, Washington Territory to obtain and disseminate information among the Indians of central Washington. Entries were made in pencil.

The notebooks were copied in 1972 from the originals which reside in the archives at Reed College, Portland, Oregon. Thanks to Professor Dorothy O. Johanson for allowing easy access.

This copy has been collated, and edited to make easier reading, and the spelling changed occasionally. The original syntax has been mostly retained. I regret to say that while the notebooks contain entries of day to day expenses, these were not copied.

Also among the archives are the drafts or handwritten copies of letters to General Howard, and these are copied verbatim. (See Letters to General Howard)
